Case Study Strategic Planning

Planning Through an Intersectional Lens

February 3, 2021
“We were excited to work with Third Wave because they were such a values-aligned organization around equity and pushed our thinking in some ways. The project benefitted from our strong relationship, which we were able to forge despite the work happening during COVID. We adjusted quickly and found a format that was effective.”

Our Role

Frontline supported Third Wave Fund by facilitating a process to develop a five-year strategic plan for 2021–2025. This gender justice activist fund is led by and for the people most directly impacted by and best positioned to end gender oppression, centering: Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) under 35 years of age especially BIPOC sex workers, cis and trans women, and trans, gender non-conforming, and intersex people of all genders. Our process involved surveying and conducting interviews, focus groups, and strategy sessions with current and former staff members, advisory council members, grantees, funders, and donors. We worked collaboratively with leadership, staff, and communications consultants to develop a strategic plan that included major findings from stakeholder research as well as an updated mission, vision, values, and theory of change. We also made recommendations regarding goals, strategies, and audiences.
