Rest, Resilience, and Reality: Lessons from the Aya Fellowship

July 28, 2026

We are often sold the myth of the lone hero—the singular face of a campaign or the individual savior. But we know the truth: social change is not a solo sport. Behind every visible leader is a visionary, hardworking collective. When we ignore this reality, we fall into the same extractive pitfalls as the systems we are fighting to dismantle, and it takes a toll on the vital teams at the frontlines of movements and social change.

Our Aya Fellowship is deeply rooted in a healing justice framework and rejects the isolation of traditional leadership development. While most programs invest in the leadership capabilities of a single person, at Frontline, we’re building something more expansive and resilient. We believe that to survive today’s hostile political and legal landscapes, entire leadership teams need the space to breathe, realign, and heal together. You cannot build a sustainable movement on a foundation of individual burnout.

By bringing whole organizational teams together, we create a sanctuary where groups can step off the treadmill of crisis, lower their cortisol, and process the weight of the moment as a unit. Through deep political analysis and unhurried “frolic breaks” on land rich with heritage and meaning, we provide the space to strategize and imagine. Our goal is simple: to transform hope from a fleeting feeling into concrete, institutional infrastructure.
