2025 END OF YEAR MESSAGE FROM FRONTLINE SOLUTIONS’ CEO, MELISSA DESHIELDS

December 18, 2025 Melissa Deshields

Dear Friends, Partners, and Visionaries,

As we close the chapter on this year and look toward what’s next, I find myself reflecting on the origins of Frontline Solutions—and the origins of my own story.

Our stories shape us long before we understand the lessons they hold. I grew up in Camden, New Jersey, an only child raised by a single mother whose brilliance stretched far beyond the opportunities available to her. We were poor in material wealth but rich in countless other ways. What my mom lacked in resources, she made up for in imagination, discipline, and an unwavering belief that learning could build a world bigger than the one we lived in. She gave me one assignment I hated most: the monthly “trip.” Every month, I had to research a country, calculate currency exchange rates, plan the itinerary, and outline all the adventures we would take. And one Sunday morning a month, we would “travel” without ever physically leaving our kitchen, exploring a place we had never been.

I didn’t realize it then, but through that very assignment, the one that kept me in lockdown while my friends were outside living their best lives, my mom was teaching me something sacred: how to dream beyond what I could see. She was training and expanding my imagination, showing me that even if you start with very little, you can still build something extraordinary.

Those early lessons became the blueprint for my life. They shaped the values—discipline, curiosity, vision, and courage—that prepared me for the work we do together at Frontline.

Frontline Solutions was founded in 2005, following Hurricane Katrina, with a driving belief in building beyond the present moment. Our original mission was to foster equitable recovery and support grassroots innovation across the Gulf Coast. Over the past two decades, we have continuously worked to advance equity and justice through strong community partnerships.

We’re proud of our accomplishments this year and over the past two decades. However, with the world rapidly changing and equity and justice initiatives under attack across the U.S., the social sector faces a critical challenge. In the face of orchestrated backlash and systemic retrenchment, the question is not just how we survive, but how we effectively organize, strategize, and build power.

The Builder’s Moment is Now: This is the era of the builder—not the bystander.

This year, as political uncertainty intensified and threats to our partners mounted, we watched with concern as many leaders across sectors backed away from the commitments to equity and justice made in 2020—victories our communities and movements had fought hard for. This environment instilled in us a profound sense of urgency, driving us to redouble our efforts in support of all those who bravely refused to back down. Their courage and determination inspired us to redefine this challenging moment—not as a time for fear and retreat, but as a critical opportunity to build anew from the ground up.

Yet, even as we shaped this belief into a rallying cry, encouraging folks in our movement to stay the course, we also had to figure out what it meant for us and our work. I realized that this was precisely the moment my mom was training me for all those years ago. And, our incredible team seized the opportunity of Frontline’s 20th anniversary to gather our community—the people who have guided and sustained us—to reflect on our past and chart the path forward. We asked ourselves how our rich history, values, and experience uniquely prepared us to support our partners in navigating our new reality and meeting our shared challenges with radical imagination. Throughout the year, we spoke with over 100 partners to understand their experiences and identify their most pressing needs.

In response to what we learned, we launched Cadre, a dynamic, integrated suite of strategic approaches designed to ensure equity-driven leaders and organizations have the necessary tools not just to withstand this moment, but to shape what comes next.

Cadre is the embodiment of my mom’s lesson in action, bringing social sector leaders together to:

1. Gather at the Table. My mom taught me that nothing powerful is built alone. We coalesce around a shared purpose, drawing strength from one another and activating the collective power already in our ecosystems.

2. Move in Rhythm. She taught me that alignment is love in action. We forge shared strategies across funders and movement leaders, choosing coordination over competition and moving together with intention and trust.

3. Invest Like We Mean to Stay. My mom taught me to plant what I want to live beyond me. We design catalytic investments that nourish regenerative systems—funding not just moments, but infrastructure and relationships that sustain over time.

4. Dream Bigger. She taught me that vision doesn’t stop at what’s visible. So, we create space for leaders to imagine boldly, turning collective vision into durable change and building the future we’re committed to leaving behind.

The radical reimagining of Frontline’s work also helped us define and embrace our evolution since 2005—from a small, scrappy firm to a comprehensive social impact ecosystem. We leverage our deep network and extensive experience through an integrated structure that includes a consulting practice, a nonprofit organization, and various capital investment vehicles. Our mission is to build collective power by supporting social sector organizations in navigating transitions and challenges, mobilizing essential resources, incubating innovative ideas, and strengthening vital ecosystems.

The stakes are too high, and the challenges ahead too complex, to be faced in isolation.

The team at Frontline is here to help you turn possibility into practice. We are ready to dream and build together toward what’s next. If your organization needs a thought partner to help manage change, strengthen its infrastructure against external threats, or is ready to align with an ecosystem of peers for greater impact, we invite you to reach out.

The future is within our grasp, secured by the collective imagination, courage, and unshakeable belief we cultivate together. Join us in building it. For a glimpse of the power of community in action, explore some of the projects and partnerships that energized us this year.

With deep belief in our collective work,
